Went back to PA for the holidays. Brian came in from Portland and Danielle from SF. We crashed at Sam and Drew's place in Philly.Una loves her ball.Fried tofu and fries and a nice seitan sandwich at The Pope.We got to check out Drew and Sam's new roof deck. Great 360 degree view of the city.My favorite vegan place in the city is now under new ownership. They changed the name and the menu but everything is still vegan. I had slice of the haymaker and it was amazing.Brian got the philly cheesesteak. I was actually too full for dessert which I now regret.Back in NC, a group of us went to Luchadoras 2 at Motor Co. in Durham. Female Mexican style wrestling to raise money for a good cause. Thanks to Grey for buying me the UNC mask a while back.That is The Scrambler in the red mask taking on The Norwegian Nightmare.Heather (purple) and Katie (aqua) got to fight it out in the ring for a wrestling mask.The next match featured Crazy Legs in black against La Baguette. Crazy legs was victorious and retained her championship belt.Grey put on my mask and hopped in the ring with Brennan but wisely stayed away from the bigger dudes.This is Sweet Buns and La Bomb-ba in the squared circle.Tag team bout. This girl was probably 6'2" or taller. The much smaller opponents did not stand a chance. I'm already looking forward to Luchadoras 3.

It's been a long time since the last post.

Went to see a show at the Local 506.

Wavves opened the show. Southern California Surf-Punk. Really fun and energetic.

I really came to see F*#k Up! Great punk rock from Canada.

Best show I've seen in a long time.

Rob and Sabrina opted to tie the knot in a very low-key fashion.

Rob wasn't dressed up enough so Grey made him a tie out of duct tape.

Thanks to some leg work by Rob and Sabrina, Grey now has the power to marry people and baptize children. Scary.

The deed is done!

Matt and Ariel swung through Carrboro and brought vegan cinnamon rolls from DC. I got a belly ache from eating too much goodness.

Baltimore to WV

The last leg of our trip included a stop in Baltimore and then a quick weekend of climbing in West Virginia.

We arrived a few days before the 4th of July. Josh, one of Rebecca's many cousins, took us out to a field behind his house for a game of baseball.

Prior to playing softball in Portland, it has been a couple of years since I swung a bat. The weather was hot but we had a lot of fun.

The next day we went climbing with Josh and his sister Jenny.

This was Josh's first time climbing and he killed it!

Our dear friend Michael Holmes was back in the country for a few days so I drove back up to Philly to see him.

We each bought a new Phillies hat.

Ian and Diana, my brother and sister-in-law, organized a big group climbing trip to the New River Gorge. I've posted numerous photos of my past climbing trips here so I'll only add a few new ones.

Here I am letting others have a taste of "Van Life."

Chicago to Pennsylvania

Rebecca rejoined the trip in Chicago where we had planned to visit my Uncle who lives there 6 months out of the year. But as our luck had it, he booked a flight back to Chico, CA to spend time with my Aunt right when we made the decision to arrive in Chicago in early June. He was still nice enough to let us stay at his place just outside the city and we got to spend a few hours with him when he flew back to IL.

We took the train downtown to explore the city. The famous Buckingham Fountain, one of the world's largest fountains.

From there it was a mile and half walk over to the Navy Pier.

The Pier had a wonderful stain glass museum that was free to the public.

After a short bus ride we arrived at the free Lincoln Park Zoo. They had an amazing Primate Center. This silverback didn't seem to enjoy being watched.

From Illinois we drove to upstate NY (near the Adirondack Mountains) to stay with some family on my mom's side. My father and his parents are buried in that area so we stopped for a visit. My father spent much of his free time umpiring baseball, hence the baseball themed headstone. My grandparents are buried to the right of him along with my grandmother's parents. It is kind of nice to be able to see most of my family in one area. Too bad they are buried so far away from where I live.

Two hours from the cemetery live my other grandparents. They have a big backyard where Pirate spent most of her time chasing squirrels and birds.

My Great Aunt and Uncle live a few miles away on Lake Cossayuna. My mom's side of the family has been coming to this lake since the 1920's. I grew up fishing on this lake with my grandfather.

My mom's cousin Todd was celebrating his 50th birthday.

The next day we came back to the lake and took out my grandfather's row boat.

While Rebecca has lots of experience paddling canoes and kayaks, this was her first time rowing a boat. It was a gorgeous day.

After a quick visit with my Aunt and Uncle in Connecticut, we drove down to PA to stay with my mom in the house that my parents bought when I was seven. We cooked some veggies and seitan on the grill while it rained.

The sun came out later that week so we went golfing with my mom and her boyfriend.

This was Rebecca's first time golfing and she did really well. This shot landed right on the green.

A couple miles from my childhood home is the area where then General Washington crossed the Delaware River and invaded Trenton, NJ. That victory that was a major turning point in the Revolutionary War. It has been over 230 years and Trenton has still not recovered.

Old homes and buildings have been preserved.

This is Bowman's Tower which was built in 1929. Great views of the area from the top.

My mom lives 30 miles northeast of Philadelphia so we took a quick trip down to visit Andrew and Samantha. Samantha and I went to highschool together and then Samantha, Andrew and I lived together in San Diego with some other friends from highschool after we finished college. Their three-story row home is amazing. They have put a lot of work into that place and it shows.

The dinning room is one of my favorite rooms in the house.

They also have tons of rescued and adopted animals. The last time I visited Uno she didn't really like me but this time we got along splendidly.

Guacamole likes to sunbathe and then take hot showers in the bathtub upstairs.

Even when I lived with Sam and Drew 10 years ago they had pet rats. I can't remember their names but they were cute and friendly.

A few days later they invited over some friends for a Sunday BBQ.

Samantha and Rita kept things classy on the soon-to-be completed Tri-Deckta roof deck.

Wyoming and back to Colorado

After soaking in some hot springs, I dipped into Utah and spent 2 days in Ogden, Utah. Went on a great trail run and did some bouldering before heading into WY.

Drove by this campground and spent the night.

It turned out to be a mecca for climbing. (Notice the climber in the right side of the photo.)

My buddy, Kevin, is traveling around the US as well. We finally crossed paths in the Boulder, CO area. Here he is with Taytem.

Idaho aka Hot Spring Heaven

I'm ashamed to admit that it has been a few years since I was able to soak in a natural hot spring. This trip was my chance to right that wrong and Idaho was going to help me along the way. I borrowed a hot springs book from Brian while in Portland and picked out just a few from the hundred or more hot springs in the southern part of the state. North of Boise in the Garden Valley area seemed to be the easiest place to get to with the highest concentration of hot springs. My goal was to soak in 4 hot springs in a 24 hour period. Piece of cake.

Hot Spring #1

I arrived in the Garden Valley area around 7:00pm and went straight to this amazing spring called Skinny Dippers Hot Spring. A half a mile hike up the side of the mountain brought you to 3 separate pools (hot, hotter, hottest) that were each large enough for a basketball team to soak in. This is the lowest and coolest of the 3 pools.

There was a pretty elaborate system of pipes that channeled hot water into the 3 pools. You could adjust the amount of hot water by adjusting valves on the pipes. I soaked till about 8:30pm and then turned in for the night.

Hot Spring #2

This little guy was easy to find first thing in the morning. I got to Hot Spring campground around 7am and joined two other soakers in this gem by the river.

Saw this fun car on my way to the campground. I drew a different angle of it later that week in my art journal and it came out really well.

Hot Spring #3

This one is called Pine Flats Hot Spring and while it was really pretty to look at it was my least favorite because it was so hot.
This is one of the soaking pools in the middle of the photo. The book said the best soaking pool was down by the river near that gravel island. Unfortunately, the river was running really high due to snow melt so that pool was under water.

I scrambled around on the slippery rocks looking for a better pool and found this shower and pool. It was still pretty hot so it was a short soak. No other soakers at this spring so it was nice and peaceful.

Hot Spring #4

Just 10 miles down the road was this beauty called Kirkham Hot Springs. Once again the high river water covered up the best soaking pools but their were plenty others to choose from. I had this place all to myself too.

I was able to make this pool cooler by removing a few rocks behind me which let in some cold river water.

One my way back to my car I saw these 3 pools right in the middle of the campsite. I can't believe I didn't see them the first time around.

After all that relaxing I had to do something active. Poor Pirate spent most of the day in the car while I was soaking so we went on a long hike.

We gained lots of elevation so she was pretty tuckered out by the end.

Portland Part 2

Brian and I drove east for the long weekend looking to get away from cold and rainy Portland. We opted for the Deschutes River area about 90 miles east along the Washington/Oregon border.

Found a perfect trail for a short backpacking trip along the river. The weather hinted at rain but it was dry the whole time. (A bit cloudy and windy however.)

There were a few old homesteads along the trail with rusty machinery left behind.

Pirate spotted this campsite for us along the river. Train tracks on the other side were actually cool to look at.

I only remember one or two trains going by that night but there could have been more.

Not too sure if this is Brian's evening drink of wine or his early morning cup of tea. Either way, Pirate was le tired.

While hiking the next day we came upon this guy which would make a great shelter from a rain storm.

Tried to get the a shot of the river through the door but it came out a bit hazy.

Besides the numerous species of birds we saw a doe with it's fawn (not pictured). The fawn was so young that it still had all of it's spots.

Then is was off to the Mount Hood National Forest to see this waterfall which I have forgotten the name of (Tamanawas maybe?).

Last Super in Portland with Brian and Catherine at the Hungry Tiger Too in Portland. Great vegan menu!

I had the Chiken and Waffles (soooo good!) while Brian opted for the Chiken and Fries. Catherine had a breakfast burrito and I ate most of her home fries.

Portland Part 1

Drove north from Chico to Portland, OR to spend some time with...

Brian, one of my best buds since age 12 and...

Catherine, a good friend from NC who just moved back to Oregon a few weeks ago.

My first night in town Catherine scored tickets to see the Portland Timbers (Major League Soccer) play. The crowd was crazy and the game was a ton of fun.

This is the Timbers' first year in the MLS and every game is sold out for the entire season! These people love their soccer.

Catherine and her friends had all the right gear and our seats were right on the field.

The Timbers beat the Columbus Crew 1-0.

The sporty weekend continued when I got to play on Brian's softball team the next day. Brian was beast, hitting a homer and a triple on the way to a 19-12 victory.

Ate at Cafe Vita. Brian got chiken & gravy while I tried the vegan fish & chips. No veggies allowed!

The grey and wet weather forced us to climb inside. While taking a break I tried some headstands. This is a big step for me since I feel really uncomfortable being upside down.

The last time I was in Portland I ate at the downtown Voodoo Doughnuts location. Catherine lives 10 blocks away from the east side shop. Here is one of their vehicles used to transport doughnuts all around the city. Yeah, that is a doughnut topped with bacon.

This day I got a chocolate cake doughnut with Chick-O-Stick topping.

I also got this guy called the McMinnville, a raised yeast doughnut filled with Bavarian cream and topped with maple frosting. So good! I went every other day to get doughnuts.

Sierra Nevada Mountains & Chico

After getting rained out in Sequoia NP I set my sights on an area of the Sierra Nevada National Forest south of Yosemite. On my way to Shaver and Huntington Lakes I stopped by the Ranger Station for a map and some backing advice. The advice I got was to go somewhere else unless I wanted to snowshoe. The place was still under a foot of snow and expecting more that week. So instead I set my course for the San Joaquin River Gorge per the ranger's recommendation.

At 14,000 feet the gorge was free from all the snow and foul weather the other area was having. And since it is on BLM land, there were no entrance or camping fees!

A few rain drops here and there and the temps were in the 50's but no snow!

After three days in the gorge I spent a few nights in Chico with my aunt and her new puppy, Nikki.

Pirate actually played with another dog! Usually she wants nothing to do with playful dogs.

Ventura & Sequoia N.P.

After leaving LA we stayed at chez Hubbard's in Ventura. Clark and Diane were amazing hosts.

We took a drive to Ojai, CA and went on this pretty hike.

Great vegan dinner at Mary's Secret Garden in downtown Ventura.

I must say, I have pretty good form.

As some of you know Rebecca's sister Gretchen has been really sick and in the hospital. Rebecca decided to fly back to NC to help take care of her. She is out of the hospital now and slowly getting better everyday but I am unsure of when Rebecca will rejoin me on this trip. Get well soon The Gretch! We love you!

Did an awesome hike up Moro Rock. Over 400 stone steps lead you up to the top of the 6,500 ft peak where you have 360 degree views of the park.

Southern California Pt. 3

One of my favorite hikes in the San Diego/Oceanside area is Iron Mountain. I like to do this one at night when the moon is waxing/waning. We didn't need headlamps on the way up but we used them on the way down. That's Phil Dow looking manly.

Three miles to the top and you get a nice view of San Diego. On clear night you can see Tijuana, Mexico.

Back at Rebecca's aunt and uncle's place there are humming birds everywhere. This gal has eggs in her nest.

We left Oceanside and drove to LA to visit our friends Timur and Kirsten. While chatting in the living room I saw Ticket To Ride on a shelf. They were down to play a quick game.

The game ended right before I was going to finish my last Destination Card. Grrrr.

We did some touristy things while in the area like Venice Beach and the Mann Chinese Theater.

Of all the foot/hand prints, Star Wars was Rebecca's favorite.

Southern California Pt. 2

After a week in Oceanside we left Pirate with Rebecca's family and went to Joshua Tree NP. This was the view from our campsite.

We did a night hike to Skull Rock.

Rebecca tried to tell creepy ghost stories.

Our dinner of teriyaki noodles, fresh portabella mushrooms and frozen veggies.

The next day turned out to be an epic day of hiking, scrambling and rock climbing. We were given sketchy directions to a sport climbing crag (J-Tree has mostly trad climbing) and without a guidebook we were certain that we would get lost. Fortunately, we ran into a group of climbers at the trailhead parking lot that were going to the same area.

About 2 miles later we arrived at the crag. Now we had to scramble and haul all of our gear over and around huge boulders. It is the most work I've had to do in order to get to a climbing area. Maybe I'm just spoiled with Pilot Mountain's easy approach. That's Claire, Melody, and Jess.

Te next day Rebecca and I climbed at The Hall of Horrors. The hike took us a whole 5 minutes from the parking lot. Haha. Rebecca set up her first top rope and rappelled for only the second time. We climbed a handful of routes that day and Rebecca got to practice setting up top ropes and rapping down.

Back in Oceanside. We took the Coaster down to San Diego for the Little Italy Art Walk.

Southern California Pt. 1

After leaving Utah we drove to Las Vegas for 2 nights of climbing at Red Rocks and walking The Strip.....but I didn't take a single picture.

Rebecca and her aunt attended a water color workshop. Lian, the instructor, also stayed with us and cooked an amazing Chinese meal every night.

It has been almost 3 years since the last time I was in southern California and almost 6 years since I lived there. It was nice to check things out that I hadn't seen in ages. On one of our day trips to San Diego we stopped by the Torrey Pines Glider Port.

It was a windy Saturday so the place was crowded.

After walking around Little Italy, we stopped at Pokez for lunch. Tofu, mushroom, potato burritos.

Before heading back to Oceanside we had a visit with Rebecca's cousin, Sheri.

The Phillies were in town playing the Padres so I got myself a ticket and watched as Halladay struck out 14 batters.

I think there were more Phillies fans than Padres fans at the game. The good guys (Phillies) won 3-1.

Moab, UT

Drove west from Boulder, CO into southern Utah to Arches National Park.

Arches was great for us because you can see most of the park's prized attractions from your car or by taking just a short hike. Since dogs are not allowed on trails in National Parks, one of us would stay with the dog around the parking lot while the other would take short hikes to see the arches.

A ranger at Arches suggested this dog friendly trail just outside the park into Negro Bill Canyon.

This was one of my favorite hikes on our trip so far mostly because Pirate had a blast exploring her surroundings and running through the many streams we had to cross.

At the end of the 4 mile trail we were rewarded with a great view of the 6th largest natural bridge in the world.

While leaving Moab we checked out a roadside crag a few miles away from Arches NP. We saw people belaying from the beds of their pickups.

Rebecca just had to climb this massive sand dune we saw while leaving Moab. A few minutes later a bus full of kids pulled up and took over the place.

Next up was Zion National Park, one of my favorite places in the US.

People were busy building cairns along the Virgin River.

Boulder, CO & Carrboro, NC

We had to extend our stay in Leadville due to a bad snow storm. We left early the next morning to head over the pass into Boulder.

The first hour or so was pretty hairy driving but after driving through the mountain pass it was sunny and clear.

Boulder is home a wonderful tea company and it's factory.

As soon as we turned onto Sleepytime Lane we could smell the fresh tea. When we pulled into the parking lot we were able to smell another flavor of tea.

Celestial Seasonings offers free tours of their factory and free samples of every tea they make.

During the tour everyone had to wear a hair net but I also got to wear the facial hair net. Score!

Later that day we took a hike up to the famous Flatirons in Boulder. For all you climbers, Eldurado Canyon is off to the left.

Our lovely hosts took us out to an amazing vegan dinner at The Leaf.

Then we flew back to Carrboro for Brian and Molly's wedding.

The rain held off until an hour after the ceremony at the UNC Arboretum.

After a quick weekend in NC we were back in Boulder for two days. This is the Wild Animal Sanctuary outside of Denver.

Lions, Tigers and Bears. Oh my!

The facility has over 320 acres of rolling grassland where the animals can run free all day. These animals are rescued from either abusive homes and unfit living situations.

Leadville, Colorado

Our first stop in Colorado was the city of Leadville which is famous for being the highest incorporated city in the US at 10,200 feet.

Meeting us there was (R to L) Tonya, Brad, Chuck and Ted (not pictured). This group is attempting to summit Annapurna next year. They come to Leadville from Boulder to train at the high altitude.

Lincoln came along to ice climb.

While the crew went ice climbing, Rebecca and I went snow shoeing.

Behind me is Mount Elbert, the highest peak in CO at 14,400 feet and the second highest peak in the contiguous US.

There was about a foot and half of snow on the ground.

At the trailhead is a 100 year old Fish Hatchery that supplies most of Colorado with its trout.

Santa Fe & A Glimpse Into "Van Life"

The chilly weather in northern Texas should have served as a warning. Santa Fe was much colder.

After walking around downtown Santa Fe, we drove about 15 miles up into the Pecos Wilderness Area which is part of the Santa Fe National Forest. Ad you can see there was a lot of snow on the ground.

The main trail was packed down pretty hard but if you ventured a foot to the right or left you might sink down to your thigh.

The trail topped out at over 11,000 feet.

Rebecca claims that this is the first snow angel that she has ever made but I don't believe it.

A good friend who is traveling and living out of his vehicle as well has been asking me to post some "Van Life" photos. Here is a typical day for those who live in the Big Green Ho, aka Peppy.

We wake up between 7:30-8am to Pirate smacking her lips together because she is hungry and thirsty. If you don't feed this dog by 9am then it is guaranteed that she will throw up. She sleeps at our feet on her bed but often wonders into the front seats to look around. When she hops back into bed she always pulls the curtains off to the side and lets in the early morning light.

Rebecca likes to park next to a patch of grass or "lawn" as she calls it. First thing to do after crawling out of bed into the cold is to feed the dog and let her go to the bathroom. Her food is stashed under the console between the front seats, but her meds and gear go behind the front seats in the tub with the blue lid.

Next, we start to roll up our curtains using shoelaces I had at the bottom of my closet. They are mostly pink and bright yellow.

After the curtains we make the bed. One sheet and two blankets. We also have sleeping bags handy if it gets really cold but we have only needed them once. It stays pretty warm once those curtains are rolled down.

Now that the bed is made and the sweater is on, Pirate goes back in the van to relax while we eat.

On the passenger side of the van behind the seats are the Food Tub and the Misc. Tub. The latter holds dishes, tupperware, yoga mats, a hammock, and extra water bottles among other things.

Breakfast is usually cereal and fruit. We buy the 3 pack of rice milk and we split one to use in our cereal. Since rice milk does not have to been refrigerated until opened this works out perfectly. We have a small cooler with ice packs but we usually eat leftovers the next day.

Now we are ready to play.... or drive to our next destination.

On this particular day we were driving from Rifle, CO to Arches NP which is about a 6 hour drive. We stopped for lunch on the side of the road. We had PB&J and a left over salad from the night before.

Most nights that we sleep in the van we wake up to a Walmart parking lot and the sound of big RVs. Some mornings however, we wake up to the sun rising over something like this.

Houston, TX

Houston was all about the family. First we stayed with the Holt's.

While Grant stayed to watch the other high school teams play, Rebecca and I meet up with her other sister and some more neices and nephews.

In Katy, TX at the Redmon's, we got to see one of Rachel's track meets. She is the anchor of the 4x200 relay. They took first place.

After Houston we drove north to Amarillo to check out Palo Duro Canyon State Park which came highly recommended by Rebecca's Great Aunt Betty. It is the second largest canyon in the US.

We were really surprised when the trail continued and actually climbed up to the base of the 310 foot Lighthouse. Even more shocking was the fact that no one had carved their name in the soft sandstone.

Austin, TX

We arrived in Austin and stayed with our good friends Amity and James. Austin has a non-profit called Austin Pets Alive that is dedicated to making Austin a no kill city. This is Harold. We visited him and a few other special guys a couple of times while in Austin. This friendly guy almost came with us on the rest of our trip.

Ruby is around 3 and she lives with Amity and James. It took Pirate some time to figure out that Ruby likes to play rough.

We ate lots of yummy vegan food while in Austin. Fried avocado tacos at Torchy's.

At Mr. Natural we had tofu and sunflower seed tamales and some other tofu dish that I can't recall what it was called.

More good vegan food at Mother's Cafe. Here is James and Amity. Amity's sister, Emmaline, was also in town visiting.

Boys vs Girls Game Night. We played Catch Phrase, Taboo and then Pictionary. Good times. (The boys won!)

We left Austin for Enchanted Rock right as SXSW was kicking into gear. Enchanted Rock State Park has a pink granite pluton rock dome that raises about 425 feet above the surrounding terrain. We came to hike and try to do some climbing.

To the right is the Big Rock with tons of hikers making their way to the top. It was a Friday and Spring Break so it was packed.

Walking to our climb which was overrun by a guide group of well over 50 teenagers. They took up every top rope or sport route under 5.11. We had to hike further in and try to find something suitable to climb.

This was the next spot we tried to climb. As you can see, it is pretty much all slab. Not my strong suit.

Pirate at the base of our route. Super hot and very little shade. I would love to try this place again during a less crowded time. They actually closed the park around 10am because it had reached it's capacity. Crazy.

Orlando to Texas

Here is a quick glimpse into "van life". When we have to sleep in the van we usually find a Walmart parking lot. Walmart has an open policy allowing travelers and RVers to park overnight in their lots as a way to get weary travelers off the road...and of course into their stores. It is also nice to have a restroom to use as soon as you wake up in the morning.

Living the glamorous life. Breakfast in a Walmart parking lot. Our first night in the van was in Panama City Beach, Florida. After parking the van, we walked into the store to use the restroom and quickly realized that is was Spring Break. There were college kids everywhere buying cheap beer, pushing bikini clad girls around in shopping carts, and generally being obnoxious. Good times.

Panama City Beach has some weird attractions. This upside down building is WonderWorks. This is what their website had to say: "WonderWorks™ is an amazing Panama City Beach attraction where scientific principles and fun come together to provide an unrivaled educational experience."

It was really windy and cold that morning due to the storms and tornados that passed through two days before.

After leaving Panama City we continued our drive through the panhandle. We stopped at this cute beach town called Seaside. We ate a great veggie lunch at one of these airstream trailers.

We ate our 2nd lunch at this little park and watched kids play football and throw around a frisbee. It was a beautiful day.

We spent that night in Biloxi, MS and then drove to New Orleans for an afternoon.

This square was really fun to walk around. There were tons of amazing artist selling their goods at a very reasonable price.

Universal Studios

Went to Olivander's Wand Shop to pick out my wand and look at owls.

All the excitement was making me thirsty so we got some Butterbeer.

Mmmmm, Butterbeer.

After waiting in line for about 45 minutes we got to go in Hogwarts for a dark roller-coaster-type ride. (Yeah, I'm a dork and I'm ok with it.)

Next up was Dr. Seuss World.

This was probably Rebecca's favorite part of the day, watching artists draw people's caricature. Some of these artists are simply amazing. This couple was giddy with anticipation.

Did you know that Donkey is Rebecca's long lost sibling. They both loooove to talk. Donkey was really funny today and Rebecca was star-struck.

Many of you know that I love Great White sharks and the Jaws movies. Here I am stealing a kiss from this beauty. Of course, I prefer my sharks alive but this plastic one will do. I was very disappointed in the Jaws ride at Universal. Not only was it too short, but the shark only came up on my side of the boat once!

We are now in Austin and will stay in Texas for another week or so before making our way to Colorado.

Back to Bradenton, FL

After our wonderful stay in Tampa, we headed back to Bradenton for another week with Rebecca's dad.

Rebecca, her dad and myself went to Stickney Point for a trail run and some sightseeing.

The bridges and wooden walkways made for an interesting trail run.

I know it is a common flower but this guy spoke to me.

The hard, grey seeds in this flower are called nickerbeads. We found a huge bush full of them. It is weird that something so hard grew from a plant.

Inspired by Dan Price's "Moonlight Chronicles", Rebecca and I have been keeping art journals on our trip. This is her first attempt using water colors. Pretty darn good.

This was the view Rebecca had while laying down in her kayak one morning.

The last time I really drew was back in highschool when I took some art classes. Drawing lines feels extremely foreign to me. I brought a few old pictures on this trip with the hopes that i might be able to draw them. This is a sketch of my grandfather from a picture that was taken in 1991 when I was still rockin' a mullet. Later that year I discovered Nirvana and swapped the mullet for the floppy grunge haircut. Maybe I'll draw me with a mullet next.

Tampa, FL

Before leaving for Tampa, we stopped at Anna Maria Point to walk on the beach.

Pirate was a bit reluctant to leave, but we assured her that she would have cats to play with in Tampa.

Our first stop was the University of Tampa where I went to college. These minarets (and 8-10 more) are found on top of Plant Hall, the oldest building on campus.

After dropping Pirate off at Brian and Brad's house, we went out to eat at Grass Roots. Unfortunately, they decided to chop a months worth of onions while we were eating. All of our eyes were watering throughout the entire meal.

The next day we went to some outdoor markets to get fresh veggies for our dinner. This lady was opening coconuts to drink.

The Taco Bus was awesome. All sorts of goodies and vegan steak for your tacos! This place will be featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on the Food Network in March.

On Sunday morning after I got my butt kicked in basketball by Andy and Chris, I met Brian, Brad and Rebecca at a Thai Temple (Wat Mongkolratanaram) that serves brunch on Sundays.

I can't remember what these were, but Brian loves them.

Later that day we went to the Lowry Park Zoo. While not the biggest zoo, it has everything you want to see and can be done in less than 2 hours.

First we feed the lorikeets.

Then the giraffes.

Then the.....oh boy, get a room kids.

This wallaby had a little one in her pouch, but I was never fast enough to get it on film.

Game night while watching the Oscars. Matt gets excited when we play Ticket To Ride.

When my grandparents lived in Florida, they would take me here every time I visited them. It is a power plant that takes in the cool ocean water and pumps out warm water. The manatees love to come there and hang out.

I've seen well over 50 manatees in this lagoon at one time, but today we only saw a few.

These guys were just leaving when we got there.

The visitors center has a Hurricane Simulator. Rebecca was a brave volunteer.

Manatees move really fast and bounce off of boats in this game.

We wrapped up our stay with a walk along Bayshore Blvd., the longest continuous sidewalk in the world. It is over 4.5 miles long.

Bradenton, FL

On our way down to the Tampa Bay area, we stopped at a vegan restaurant that we ate at a few years ago. Ethos is in Orlando and everything on the menu is vegan. One of the employees has the largest E.T. collection outside of Universal Studios. There are a few plastic figures spread out around the place.

We arrived in Bradenton, Florida that night to stay with Rebecca's father. Bradenton is between Tampa and Sarasota on the gulf coast. On Saturday I woke up early and went to the Sarasota Farmer's Market.

Found this guy on our van one morning. He stayed there as we drove to the pool to swim some laps.

Rebecca's dad had kayaks and an outrigger ready to go. We went out paddling 3 out of 5 days.

This beauty is an outrigger. I've never seen one up close before this trip.

While on the water we saw bald eagles, kestrels, an osprey, ibis, and many other flying creatures.

We are now in Tampa visiting friends. Photos from Tampa will be posted sometime next week.

Charleston, SC

With our van packed and ready...we hit the road.

Gear underneath and bed on top. We have 4 inches of memory foam to sleep on and just enough room undereath for our clothes, backpacking gear, climbing gear, skateboards, food, pirate's stuff, and a few other random things.

The first stop on our trip was Charleston, SC where Rebecca's mom, step-dad, and youngest sister, Katie, live.

The weather was sunny but a bit chilly, so Pirate got to break in her new fleece. Tucker's black fur was enough to keep him warm.

The day after we arrived Katie had off from work, so we planned an epic day. First, we took Pirate, Tucker, and a friend's dog, Mable, to this little beach area near downtown so they could run and play.

Tucker is an expert hole digger.

Next, we went to James Island where there is a park with an outdoor climbing wall. The wall is about 70 feet tall, which is about double the height we are used to climbing at the Chapel Hill Community Center.

The girls went to "Bottles 'n Brushes" on Wednesday night. You get to drink wine and someone shows you how to paint a different scene or object each night. Their night was a sunset marsh scene.

Next we are off to the Bradenton/Tampa area of Florida to stay with Rebecca's dad and see some of my college friends.

Being flat allows him to travel via the mail and have adventures all around the world.

Emily and Galen's newly remodeled backyard is looking sweet. They had a few people over for food to celebrate our upcoming nuptials.

One of the highlights of every summer is the Paper Hand Puppet Intervention show at the Forest Theater. A small group of us met for a picnic.

I think I would enjoy walking on stilts. That way no one could see my bald spot.

About a month ago I sent out an email about my "Sort-of-Bachelor Party". Some dudes got together and this is what happened.
Grey came to the house at 9am on Saturday and made me wear this T-shirt. Someone found a photo of a midget riding a sheep. Of course my mug was photoshopped onto it.

Then it was onto Weaver Street Market for the usual group breakfast.

Sabrina had already been in Africa for two months when Rob went to meet here there for a little trip. Then they planned to return to the States together. Rob's birthday fell on a day when they were still there, so we decided to decorate their place in honor of his birth and Sabrina's return. Here is how it went down:

LeeAnn grew up in NC and the two met while teaching together. They spent a couple days with us.

I Don't Want To Talk About What Is Back There

There has been a lot going on since my last post over a month ago. Here are some of the highlights:

Trivial Pursuit is one of those games that can last forever. My team got stomped.

A group of us went out to Saxapahaw to see another Paperhand Puppet show at their "studio". This one was called "Love and Robots: A Rock Opera in Ones and Zeros." I think this was my favorite puppet show of theirs.

This is Arin's debut on Robot Toast. Look for many more photos of this guy in the future. He is going to be a star.

For months a group of us have been planning a skateboarding trip to the Outer Banks. Some of my friends from southern California flew out for a week. (Left to Right: Kevin, Patty, me, Gabe, and Ji)

Rebecca introduced the SoCal kids to Cheerwine. They tracked down some OG glass bottles that contain cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup.

We had a taste test to see if we could tell the difference.

Before the cake was revealed, there was a sundae making contest with the secret ingredient of.....

Kari and Stephen went head to head as the rest of the group cheered them on and heckled the British judge.

Each contestant made two sundaes for the judges.

Rob (the surly British judge) gave points for appearance and Katie gave points based on taste.

Then it was time to bring out the cake!

I Never Saw Your Crooked Teeth

Things have been pretty busy lately so these photos have been on the camera for awhile.

We will start things off with Grey falling out of his lofted bed onto a package his mom sent him. Classic Hubbard.

Our big snow storm of 4-5 inches shut down the town for a couple of days.

And I must say, 4 inches of snow is plenty. I don't miss shoveling 6-10 inches of snow every three weeks during winter.

This is Rebecca's second cake she made for her class. My girl is amazing!

Brennan had big plans for Katie's birthday cake. The triathlon themed cake called for 6 sheet cakes and a ton of buttercream icing.

We had 3 different flavors of cake. The middle tupperware section is for the "lake".

Kari got an airbrush machine for Xmas, so we were all excited to try it out...especially Brennan.

The directions were not much help.

Neither was Grey.

Nor was I. Dancing was about all I was good for and those of you that have seen me dance know how bad that that can be.

Fondant is a moldable, edible, sugary confection. We made trees, bikes, and different "Adams" and "Katies" to spread all over the cake.

I've asked Kari to airbrush the hood of my car with a unicorn jumping over a rainbow.

After spending some time with Rebecca's family in Charlotte, we hopped on a plane for Austin, Texas to visit her two older sisters and their family's.

Dad was in town for a visit as well. A father and his girls.

All the nieces and nephews were there and lots of Rock Band was played.

Upon our arrival, I was informed that the second annual Talent Show would take place in two days. I started preparing immediately.

It has been sometime since my last update. A lot has happened since then so I will post the holiday happenings in 3 parts.

As the house exchanged gifts, it became clear that some of us are more artistic than others. Rebecca got a Grey Hubbard original.

Rebecca has been working with clay lately. Rob got a climbing rope and quickdraw magnet.

Grey got an AC Green jersey magnet.

Sabrina got a frog ornament.

My Mom loves cardinals so Rebecca got her a little tree and decorated it with clay cardinals.

I missed out on this year's cookie party but a few were brought home to me. Bacon and eggs.

There were a lot of birthdays to celebrate in late October/early November. After Grey's B-Day, Katie organized a surprise party for Brennan.

Once again, Kari made a kick-ass cake. For those of you who can't tell, that is Brennan playing disc golf.

There was a pirate theme or maybe it was just an excuse for Vijay to dress up.

Brennan got destroyed by Silly String as soon as he walked into the house.

Keeping with tradition, Jaxon helped blow out the candles.

A few days later, a group of us were planning to meet to make a cake for Kari's surprise party. Just an hour before we started, Kari showed up unexpectedly with Jaxon to drop off more treats.

Jaxon gave me a yoga lesson. Here he is showing me how to do Warrior.

Then we had to get Kari and Jaxon out of the house before everyone came over to decorate her surprise cake.

Halloween 2009

Rebecca and I were pretty excited about our costumes this year. She made this amazing mask of E.T. and I planned to dress up as Elliott.

Here I am attaching a white blanket around E.T.'s head. Our goal was to recreate the scene where Elliott is riding his bike with E.T. in the front basket.

How cute is that!

Here is the finished product. You can't see the bicycle handlebars because they are hidden behind the basket, but it was a nice touch.

The cast of The Wizard of Oz was pretty good.

The house from the movie Up was unique, but I don't think he needed to write "Up" on the front.

This thing was by far the best costume i've seen in years. Remember the fortune teller booth from the movie "Big"? This rendition was a cardboard, wood, fabric, paint, etc. masterpiece equipped with wheels. The booth was constantly mobbed as it made its way slowly down Franklin Street. Some lucky observers were even given fortunes.

Grey and Warren had to act out a passage that was read aloud by Maria from a book of erotica that was left at our house. I think this had something to do with a mermaid emerging from the water and the fisherman that was waiting for her.

Of course the dude that hates cut off jean shorts the most lost the round where you had to wear a pair of Grey's for the rest of the night.

Poor Katie had to eat a spoonful of salsa, butter, soymilk, and peas. Pretty nasty.

Rebecca's sister, Laura, and her husband, Chris, just welcomed Caleb Dawson Pallavicini to the world.

One of Rebecca's other sisters, Katie, drove up from Florida to Winsten-Salem. She is determined to be the favorite aunt, so she is starting early.

Grey and I went backpacking in western Virginia. This was Grey's first time hiking on the Appalachian Trail so it needed to be documented.

We started out in Damascus, VA on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

There were lots of fun fungi to observe.

It had been raining a bunch so everything was nice and green. Rain is great for color but bad if you want to have a fire at night.

Unfortunately, it was too early in the season for the leaves to begin to change.

Emily and Galen got married on a rainy afternoon on a farm outside of Pittsboro.

The rain stopped long enough for the ceremonial first toss on the wedding cornhole set.

16. The Rolling Stones- Sticky Fingers (1971)
This is actually the only Stones album I own but it seems to be on a lot of people's top 100 so I guess I own one of the better ones. This was their 9th studio album and the first one on their own label.

17. Rites of Spring- End on End (1986)
Largly considered one of the first bands to shift hardcore to a more personal place , they are considered by many as the first emo band. This is one of the many bands I wish I could have seen live but they only played 12 live shows and I would have been 8 or 9 at the time. Featured Guy Picciotto and Brendan Canty of Fugazi.

18. Tori Amos- Little Earthquakes (1992)
A good friend I met in college worshipped everything that was Tori, so that is how I came to love this record. After listening to hours of hardcore and punk records in college i would play this cd while i was studying or to relax so it holds a certain place in my hear if only for nostalgia purposes. Plus, Tori is a redhead which doesn't hurt her cause either.

19. The Weakerthans- Reconstruction Site (2003)
The first time I heard The Weakerthans it was when they played live with Lucero and Murder by Death (two of my favorite bands at that time) in San Diego. The next day I went out and bought this record and I don't think more than two weeks have gone by where I haven't listening to at least one song off it. Every good mix cd should include a Weakerthans' song.

20. The Promise Ring- 30 Degrees Everywhere (1996)
This record is super emo but you gotta love Davey's lisp and catchy lyrics. This band started off as a side project to Cap N' Jazz but became the signers full time thing after they broke up in '95. I thought it was funny that the super emo singer always wore football jerseys. "Couldn't you just take the second bus home?"

Time Is A Game That Only Children Play Well

Katie and I had another triathlon this weekend.

This event featured a pool swim, which has its pros and cons.

After food and cake the party moved downstairs to the fooseball table. Katie demonstrates the importance of stretching before a match.

Leave The Ring On The Rail For The Wheels to Nullify

Last week was my Aunt Terry's (center, blue top) 50th Birthday celebration. Her and my Uncle Billy rented an 8 bedroom house in Virginia Beach. She is one of 9 siblings. Six of them are pictured here. (Sorry for the blurry photo.)

We played lots of Wii bowling until it was time to hit the beach or the backyard pool.

I learned to play Mexican Train Dominos and now I am addicted!

Then my cousin Eric (yellow shirt) developed a game that pitted two teams of siblings against each other. Teams took turns answering questions about about one another and growing up together. I learned that Ken's favorite present was one that he still has some 40 years later; a desk he got when he was a kid.

The following week a group of us went to Lost Cove near Linville Gorge.

Annie made the trip as well. She is 16 years young.

2nd Annual Barnes Street Scavenger Hunt.

There were some good costumes again this year. Heather sports her prize winning outfit complete with condom holders.

Team Disastrously Fabulous got 2nd place despite having only 1 bike and no camera at the beginning of the race and not knowing their way around Carrboro.

15. Hot Water Music-Fuel For The Hate Game (1996)
Great Florida punk rock with lots of sing along parts! Great guitar riffs and bass lines throughout this CD. One of the all-time great Florida bands.

14. Fugazi-Repeater (1990)
I was 14 or 15 and playing Street Fighter 2 with my friend Eric on the day I first heard Fugazi. His brother, Tom, came into the room, and he played a mix tape that had mostly radio-ready bands that I knew. But the opening lines to "Waiting Room" caught my attention. With $10 CDs, $5 shows, and a no moshing rule, I still think Fugazi was the most important punk band of my generation.

13. Faith No More-Angel Dust (1992)
I had (ok, still have) the biggest man-crush on Mike Patton. Angel Dust is a truly amazing record that still sounds as great 15 years after it was released. Epic might be FNM's most famous album, but this one was their most diverse and experimental.

12. Elliott Smith-XO (1998)
I knew I had to put an Elliott Smith record on this list, but it was a close one between XO and Either/Or. XO won out because it sounds a bit more polished and produced (it was on a larger indie label) and I like the cover art more.

11. Common-Like Water For Chocolate (2000)
Common was one of the first "underground" hip-hop artist that I was exposed to . His lyrics are smart, political, and often funny. This record features Cee-lo, Black Thought, Jill Scott, D'Angelo, and Mos Def.

Yet another climbing trip. This time we head back to the New River Gorge in West Virginia. I will only post a few climbing photos since my blog is already over loaded with them.

I Know It Is Wrong But What Should I Do?

Here are some photos from my first triathlon of the season. The water was in the mid 60's and it was only a bit warmer out of it. Not a very fun race for me, but I have a few more to go.

It would have been nice to have a full wetsuit for this race.

I was really confused and disorientated after the swim, because the water was so cold. I felt like I was getting a brain freeze every time my head went into the water. (Is my butt really that non-existent?)

Vacation Time! Rebecca and I had two weeks planned in Mexico but that whole swine flu thing canceled our plans for now. Instead we went on a backpacking trip and then drove down to Florida to visit friends and Rebecca's dad.

Rebecca had some foot trouble, and mice got into her pack and chewed up some of her clothes while we slept. Bummer.

Matt has been growing that beard for over a year. I'm sure he still gets the ladies though.

For our vegan brunch, we feasted on biscuits and gravy, fruit, pancakes, hash browns, and soy bacon.

I was then introduced to my new favorite board game called Ticket To Ride! Ariel was a sore loser.

Then there was a week were I didn't take a single photo. Ooops.

Adam's Top 25 Albums Part 2

20. Silver Jews-Tanglewood Numbers (2005)
Often thought of as a Pavement side project (Stephen Malkmus is an original member), the Silver Jews have been a constant fixture in my cd player for the last 4 years. Even though they have been together since 1994, they have only toured twice, and I was lucky enough to see them both times. David Berman, the man behind the band, is also a well known poet and novelists. He announced in Jan. 2009 that he was quiting music to focus on writing. If you get one new record off my list, you should make it this one.

19. Cursive-Domestica (2000)
If you ever go through a tough break up this may or may not be the record you want to listen to. It is a shame that most of their other releases are just so-so. Or maybe that makes this one that much more amazing.

18. Songs:Ohia-The Lioness (2000)
I'm still amazed that such a moving voice can come from a short stocky guy with a unibrow. Haunting vocals and lyrics from Jason Molina who released music under a few different names. This is what Black Heart Procession would have sounded like if they lived in a cold grey place. On this record you can hear a mix of metal, alt-country, and folk.

17. Radiohead-Ok Computer (1997)
The Bends was a great record but OK Computer is Radiohead's masterpiece. I've tried to listen to the material after this record, but I don't even try anymore.

16. Modest Mouse-Lonesome Crowded West (1997)
Isaac Brock can write some catchy rock tunes with great lyrics. This record was my first exposure to Modest Mouse, and I still think it is their best record to date. Every time I go on a long road trip, I make sure that this cd is in the car with me.

I've always had a love for lists. It can be a "To Do List" or "Best Things To Do While You Are In... List." It doesn't matter, as long as there are numbers and items, I'm happy. I've had this list in my head for some time now, and I thought I would do something about it. Here are my top 25 favorite CDs/Records that I own, in no particular order. (Note: In order to be included on this list, I have to own the CD or Record. There probably should be a Beatles record on the list, but since I don't own a full Beatles album, there are none on the list.)

ADAM'S TOP 25 ALBUMS - (In no order)

25. Metallica-Master of Puppets (1988)
I think "And Justice For All" was my first Metallica record, but this one is my favorite. I listened to my fair share of metal when I was young...along with Amy Grant and other bad pop music, and this one keeps my head-banging long after I got sick of the other ones.

24. The Mountain Goats-The Sunset Tree (2005)
I first heard the Mountain Goats around 2003 or 2004 and I wasn't really into them. A few years later I moved to NC, and since John (singer/songwriter) lived in Durham I heard about them all the time. I picked up this CD from my collection and gave it another listen, and I've been hooked on The Goats ever since. John is one of best songwriters of the past 15 years, and their live shows are unforgettable.

23. The roots-Things Fall Apart (1999)
I wasn't really that into hip-hop in high school, and even though The Roots were from Philly, I never paid much attention until I heard this record while in a car with a friend. This record has stood the test of time, and it is as important now as it was when it came out 9 years ago.
Key Songs-"The Next Movement" and "Dynamite!"

22. Into Another-Ignaurus (1994)
There was a kid in my highschool who would always wear hardcore and punk band t-shirts. This is when I was first getting into that scene, and instead of talking to him, I would go out and buy tapes of the bands on the shirts I would see him wear. I think that is how I discovered Into Another, which is still one of my all-time favorite bands. This record is their masterpiece! I still remember the first time I saw them live when I was 16 or 17. I had butterflies in my stomach, and I'm sure I was stage diving during their whole set.

21. Sun Kil Moon-Ghosts of the Great Highway (2003)
I was never a huge Red House Painters fan, but when Mark Kozelek put out this record with a new band I was hooked. On my list entitled "Songs I Wish I Had Written" I believe there are two, if not three songs, from this record on that list. A few years later they released a record of Modest Mouse covers which is pretty good for a covers record, but since then they have fallen flat. Doesn't matter though, I will listen to this CD 20 years from now, and I will still be excited to hear every song.

This is a picture of my amazing friends before they surprised me with a parade in honor of my birthday. I'm not to sure why Tamara's pants are all wet, but I don't think it was because she peed herself.

While Grey was still in South America, he started hyping up a Weird Facial Hair Party. So we made it happen. Coincidentally, my old friend Carlin from UT sent me a package full of mustaches over the summer. They were put to good use and finally realized their full potential. Thanks Carlin!!!

In honor of Grey's return from spending eight months in South America, we filled his room from CEILING to FLOOR with balloons.

For someone who talks so much, I was surprised to see how often Vijay ran out of breath.

To maximize efficiency, we hung a tarp to section off a smaller portion of Grey's room.

Miss Amity had a birthday party weekend in the mountains of western North Carolina. Here are some photos of the rain soaked weekend.

Jeff and Merideth drove in from Knoxville with a guitar and fun socks.

Each couple was responsible for a meal. James made a noodle stir fry and dumplings this night but Frank and Elizabeth's pumpkin pancakes were a favorite of mine. Actually everyone's meals were great except for my weak pancakes.

It started with 4 girls on a bed....

and it ended with all 8 of us acting like sardines.

The rain kept us inside playing games most of the day. I'm not any better at Connect 4 now then I was when I was 8.

People were starting to get cabin fever so canoes and kayaks were taking out in the rain.

On the way back to Carrboro I stopped in Asheville to have dinner with two friends from college whom I haven't seen in more than 5 years. Katie and Jason "Tiger" De Los Santos moved to NC from Tampa about a year ago and are still adjusting to not sweating year round.

Went to see Rick Froberg's new band Obits play at the Local 506. Never having had the chance to see Hot Snakes or Drive Like Jehu, this was the next best thing.

Year In Review

Here are some of my favorite photos, some posted and some not posted, of 2008.

I wanted to see how long I could go with trimming my beard. The answer: about 4 months. I could have gone longer but I was going to see Rebecca's father for the first time as "her boyfriend" and I didn't think this shaggy mess would go over too well. I know it is not the biggest beard in history but it is big for me.

Not too sure what Liam was looking at but I just like that he set up his tent away from the rest of us and chose to eat by himself.

I drove to Charlotte to watch the Eagles with John and Kelly at a bar owned by a former Philly-suburb resident. This picture was taken right after we overcame an 18 point deficit to take the lead. But the lead didn't last and the Eagles sent us home in tears yet again.

Beasts Bounding Through Time

My buddy John, who I went to Middle School and High School with, now lives in Charlotte with his wife and daughter. He organized a trip to see the Flyers play the 'Canes in Raleigh in early December. I think there were about 20 Flyers fans in our group tailgating and heckling Carolina fans.

The Flyers ended up winning in overtime.

Our first poker night in a long time. Eli and Leo took home all the money, so next time you see them out ask them to buy you a drink.

Christmas cookie making party at Katie's place. She provided the icing, sprinkles, and other fun things while everyone else provided the cookies.

Rebecca and I made vegan cookies and icing the night before and then added some of Katie's food coloring.

Burning in Water, Drowning in Flames

Rebecca had a birthday in late November. First we had a Rock Band Party complete with dancers and groupies.

I'm no Phil Collins but I can hold my own.

The next night we moved the party to the ice skating rink.

I'm not too sure what is going on in this photo.

We finished off the birthday weekend with a bonfire.

Rebecca and I spent Thanksgiving in upstate New York with my family. The weather was cold and wet all week long. Rebecca was lucky enough to be able to wear my grandmother's rain gear. Look at those skinny chicken legs. (Rebecca loves the face on tree in the background.)

My grandparents got the ugliest dog they could find from the shelter. Aggie might be ugly but she really is a sweet dog. She doesn't like to get her picture taken however.

Those of you who know Rebecca know that she has problems hearing. I was shocked when she said she heard Richard Simmons' voice in JFK airport. She looked around and saw him a few gates away. She was so excited to go talk to him and get her picture taken. He was very friendly and talked to everyone who came up to him even though it was 7:15 in the morning. Oh, he was wearing shorts and white tube socks. He claims he doesn't even own a pair of pants.

I finished off my week of live music with the Troika Music Festival which is held every year in Durham and features all Triangle area bands plus one special guest. Last year it was Man Man, this year it was Kimya Dawson.

My main goal was to see The Curtains of Night, a female two-piece from Chapel Hill that play loud and long.

A Robot Toast update is long over due! First off we have a visit from two old friends from Tampa, and then we finish off the post with a backpacking trip.

Here we are on our way to the Eno River State Park. Chris is riding shotgun and Brian is in back with Rebecca.

After a hike we went to the lake for some paddling and relaxing.

This past weekend myself and 8 others went on a short backpacking trip in Virginia. We arrived late Friday night around 10:30pm and just set up camp for the night.

I Gave Her My Heart, She Gave Me A Pen

The group known as the Paperhand Puppet Intervention puts on a big show every year that runs for 5 weeks in August and September. They offer 3 showings a week, and they sell out almost every night. We arrived 30 minutes before start time and had a picnic as the crowd filed in.

The performance this year was called "I am an Insect." The first scene was about a little girl watching all the insects play while her grandfather, the scientist, took a nap.

Notice the grandfather sleeping to the right of the stage.

One of the best things about the performance is the live band that plays the "soundtrack." It takes the show to a whole different level.

Don't forget about the rare break-dancing beetle.

I think I'm going to try to teach myself how to walk on stilts. It seems like so much fun.

While the show is geared towards people of all ages, there are some serious political and anti-capitalistic undertones.
Grasshoppers on bikes knocked over buckets of "oil and money" and shots were taken at our president. Most people in the crowd supported the views of the PPI, but you could see some people were very uncomfortable while many cheered in agreement.

The spider with glowing eyes was really cool. (Spiders are not insects are they?)

Every year they walk one large puppet through the crowd. Last year a 20 foot Buddha passed over the crowd with out stretched arms.

A Coat of White Primer

I spent an amazing week in Austin, TX with Rebecca's two sisters and her 6 nieces and nephews. Here are some of the highlights before my camera ran out of batteries:

The first order of business (ten minutes after I arrived) was to play Lake Ball. This is similar to baseball but if someone hits the ball into the lake you have to jump in and go get it before they score. This is Kate up to bat.

Grant likes to slide into home plate with style.

It pays to be tall in Lake Ball.

Then we went tubing.

Having two tubes was great because you were able to jump back and forth as Brett demonstrates here.

I tried wake surfing, which is like wake boarding but your feet are not strapped in. I failed miserably on the first day.

But on my second day, I stood up and got a few nice rides.

Kate got dressed up for our talent show.

There were the alphabet olympics, a magic show, a lion tamer and his lion, sword fighting, a history of music complete with dancers, and much much more.

One day we took a drive to Hamilton Pool, a fresh body of water with a waterfall.

The water temperature was perfect, but since it had been over a week since the last rain fall, the water fall was only a small trickle.

There were fun rocks to run around if you wanted to stay out of the sun.

We drew upside down faces on people's chins.

And Brett just drew a small goatee on his chin.

I received an email the other day saying that Grey was coming back form Peru for a visit. We were a bit shocked at this but excited just the same. However, when Tim went to pick him up from the airport things just didn't feel right...

"Grey, you have lost a lot of weight... and shrunk in size?"
"Just shut up and take me home tubby."

Grey did the usual things he does so we didn't think much of it at the time. He had a dirty mustache and drank like he used to...

He looked at the internet all day long...
"Hey, have you guys seen this video yet? What about you? Have you seen it?"

He left the blender in the sink...
"I'll clean this up later guys."

He left cabinet doors open...
"No!!! I wasn't going to leave it like that!"

He ate the last cookie.
"Nom nom nom"

He shopped at clothing stores for gay men...
"Hey guys, come check out my cute new jean shorts."

He even went to Rob's Birthday party at the Community Center.
"Hey Rub!! Happy Birthday Rub!!"

We made Rob climb with a My Little Pony balloon tied to his harness.

This was a card that Tim made. The front of the card said, "It takes a village to raise a child." The inside read, "And by the way you turned out we know what Village you were raised by."
I love that I'm the guy in leather. Vijay is the sailor, Grey the indian, Tim does construction work by night, and Rob has a summer job on Brokeback Mountain.

We started to get suspicious when Grey started acting strange.
"Don't worry guys, I'll take out the recycling."

"Sleep tight Rob, it will all be over soon..."

We miss you Grey. Be safe and learn lots of spanish.
